Requirements

License plate blanks get stamped and embossed at high speed, often with raised characters, so temper is the main lever here rather than coating.

  • Ductility versus spring-back: the metal needs enough ductility to take a deep stamp without cracking or tearing at the embossed character edges, but enough spring-back resistance to hold that shape crisply after the die opens and the blank ejects.
  • Wrong temper: characters come out shallow, torn at the edges, or the blank warps slightly after stamping.

Surface quality matters even without a coating on the blank, because retroreflective sheeting gets applied afterward and it's thin. Roller marks, pits, or other surface defects in the mill finish telegraph through that sheeting just as they would through a paint film, so the reflective-grade substrate needs a clean, consistent surface even though it's uncoated.

Gauge consistency matters more here than on most coil applications because plates run through automated stamping presses at volume. Thickness variation across the coil accelerates die wear and causes misfeeds or jams on a high-speed line, which is a production problem before it's ever a finished-plate problem.

How it's formed

Coil is fed directly into stamping presses that blank, emboss, and form the plate in one pass, with no coating step since the blank is left mill-finish for the reflective sheeting applied after stamping.

Why is license plate coil left uncoated?
The substrate is reflective grade specifically to work with the retroreflective sheeting applied after stamping, not to be a finished surface on its own. A coating would sit between the metal and the sheeting and add nothing, so mill finish with a clean, consistent surface is the standard specification.
What temper works best for embossed license plate stamping?
Temper needs enough ductility to take a deep character stamp without cracking or tearing at the embossed edges, but enough rigidity to hold that shape crisply after the blank ejects from the die. Too hard and characters tear; too soft and the plate warps or loses definition.
Does surface finish matter if the plate isn't coated?
