Requirements

Sign faces don't carry the twenty-year weathering expectation that roofing or cladding do.

  • Why PE is the practical choice: most signage gets updated, rebranded, or replaced well before coating life becomes the limiting factor, so PE costs less than PUPA or PVDF and holds up fine for the shorter service window most signage actually sees.
  • Over-specifying weatherability: PVDF-grade weatherability on a sign meant to be swapped out in five years spends money on a property the sign will never use.

Flatness still matters, just for a different reason than weathering.

  • Graphic show-through: sign faces are usually printed, vinyl-wrapped, or painted after fabrication, and any waviness or surface defect in the coil shows through the graphic once it's applied, sometimes more visibly than it would on a bare painted panel, especially under backlighting.
  • What flatness is for here: a flat, clean substrate is what makes the graphic application look right, not what makes the coating survive decades outdoors.

Where a sign genuinely stays up for years of full outdoor exposure without replacement, expect PE to chalk and fade faster than a premium coating would.
