Coil Finishes Compared

Mill-finish is the bare, uncoated base material. Prepainted adds a color coating applied to the coil. Stucco-embossed adds a rolled-in texture that increases stiffness and hides handling marks, available on either mill-finish or prepainted coil.

Frequently asked questions

Does stucco embossing work on prepainted coil, or only mill-finish?
Both. Stucco-embossed coil is available mill-finish or coated in the same systems and colors as flat coil. The embossing is applied before or after coating depending on the production line.
Which finish is cheapest?
Mill-finish is the base material with no coating or texture step added, so it's the starting point cost-wise. Prepainted and stucco-embossed both add a processing step on top of that base material.
Can I switch from a flat finish to stucco-embossed without changing gauge?
Yes, but the point of switching is often to use a lighter gauge and still get comparable dent resistance. Confirm the target gauge against your specific load and handling case rather than assuming a fixed downgrade.
Does embossing affect how the coil is roll-formed or stamped?
Not fundamentally: embossed coil forms similarly to flat coil for most roll-forming and stamping operations. The main consideration is confirming the emboss depth suits the intended lamination or forming process.
