Aluminum vs Steel

Aluminum weighs about a third of steel and resists corrosion without coating, but steel is stronger and stiffer per unit volume. The right choice depends on whether the application is weight-limited or strength-limited, and how much corrosion protection the environment demands.

Weight-sensitive structures, coastal or marine exposure, complex extruded shapes, or anywhere lower lifecycle maintenance from corrosion resistance offsets a higher material cost.

When to choose steel

Primary structural framing, heavy machinery, and high-load components where raw strength and stiffness per unit volume matter more than weight.

Frequently asked questions

Is aluminum as strong as steel?
Not by raw strength per unit volume: most steels outperform most aluminum alloys there. Aluminum wins on strength-to-weight, since it weighs about a third of steel for a given volume, which is why it's favored where weight matters more than absolute stiffness.
Does aluminum rust like steel?
No. Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer that protects it from further corrosion without coating. Carbon steel rusts without paint or galvanizing. Stainless steel resists corrosion too, via chromium content, but at a different weight and cost profile than aluminum.
Which material costs less?
It depends on the application, not just raw material price. Steel is often cheaper per unit strength, but aluminum's lower weight and lower lifecycle maintenance (no repainting or galvanizing to prevent rust) can offset that over the life of a project.
Can aluminum replace steel in structural framing?
Sometimes, but the structure typically has to be redesigned around aluminum's lower stiffness and strength per volume, not just swapped material-for-material. It's a common approach in weight-sensitive structures, less common in heavy primary framing.
Why is aluminum common in coastal or marine construction?
Its natural corrosion resistance holds up well against salt air and moisture without the ongoing maintenance carbon steel needs in the same environment. That lifecycle advantage is often the deciding factor in coastal cladding, boat trim, and marine hardware.
